Ryzen motherboards...I can't decide!!!
« on: August 31, 2017, 11:34:36 AM »
So yah think for my birthday present...I'm rebuilding my system.  I know the i5-3570k would still last me a good bit...I still feel the need for an upgrade ;)

With that in mind...I'm going to get:
Ryzen 1700 or 1700X (depending on what's on sale)
G.Skill TridentZ RGB 16GB DDR4 2400

Annd here comes my problem:  I've narrowed it down to 2 boards:
MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon
Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K5

Don't know which one I want...also hoping my Corsair H50 will keep the Ryzen cool.  But yah...any suggestions?  And no I'm not going any higher than $160 on a board.

Both boards are great boards. I would by the cheaper of the two unless one has a feature you like or need over the other. ;)

Well I went on and pulled the trigger:

Ryzen 1700X
G.Skill Flare X 16GB DDR4-2400
Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K7
Corsair H110i Extreme

Now to wait for Newegg to verify...and ship...

How well does that Flare X clock with Ryzen's?

Aweseome setup. I'm guessing 4.0GHz overclock perhaps higher if you get some good silcon. 8)

I doubt these will get me a good overclock (it is DDR4-2400).  I just was making sure the memory was compatible and I was KIND OF on a budget ;)  If I catch some better ram on sale later on I may switch out.  Right now I just read on Guru3D about the Gaming K7's BIOS.  Luckily a new one is out to fix the issue (F5 was overvolting the processor).  Oh joy when I get it all in LOL!

The Ryzen CPUs can handle more volts than most would have you believe. As long as your cooling is good and the CPU isn't getting too hot I would run the higher voltage.

Yah.  The H110i is keeping it nice and cool I THINK...different readings from different programs (HWMonitor, BIOS, Corsair Link) but  I trust the BIOS more anyway.

Only got a couple quirks with the system:
need to see if the fans are rubbing against something or that's just how loud they are with the radiator..the stock fans from Corsair that is...

I'm still freezing up  sometimes on boot or shutdown and 2 of the USB ports kind of "FaileD" on me but was fine the next boot.  Actually it was more than 2 USB ports as an internal header with the H110i's LINK went meh on me too.  I really hope this board isn't dying already.  I'd hate to disassemble it lol.

TM5 have you tried higher voltage yet? New safe estimates show the Ryzen handling 1.45 volts easily.

As far as CPU, it's set to Auto atm and I've seen it jump up as high as 1.5 and as low as 1.26 (HWMonitor).  Currently I've used Gigabyte's DAC USB boost in the BIOS (adds +.1V to the USB).  I added it to all the USB ports so we'll see.  It can go as high as .3V more so...

I saw the post about Ryzen CPUs handling the high voltage.  If it gives me more fits I will fiddle with that.
